When I first moved into my Philly row home, a bright red Dutch oven sat on the stovetop—”gifted” to us by the previous resident, who probably thought it too heavy to pack. After a few good scrubs, I found myself making Dutch oven recipes weekly, from meatballs simmering in tomato sauce to braised short ribs with gravy and many, many Dutch oven soup recipes. I can’t explain it, but I swear soup tastes best when it’s made in a Dutch oven!

Our favorite soup recipes put this all-purpose pot to good use, no matter how you acquired yours. Variety is the name of the game here, and there are so many recipes that you’ll never tire of your Dutch oven! There are plenty of creamy soups like vegetable chowder, cheesy potato soups and brothy favorites like beef stew, coconut curry and chicken and dumplings. If you prefer the smooth texture of a pureed soup, try butternut squash or potato leek.

There are plenty of dietary-friendly soups, stews and chilis here, too, accommodating gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan diners. Most of these recipes are one-pot meals, and many can be made in under an hour. Like all soup recipes, I recommend serving each bowl with slices of crusty artisan bread (or, hey, how about a Dutch oven bread recipe?) to soak up all that flavorful goodness.

From the Recipe Creator: This is the best clam chowder recipe ever! In the Pacific Northwest, we dig our own razor clams and I grind them for the chowder. Since these aren't readily available everywhere, the canned clams are perfectly acceptable. —Sandy Larson, Port Angeles, Washington

Dutch Oven Soup Recipes FAQ

Are Dutch ovens good for making soup?

Dutch ovens are great for making soup! They’re the best cookware for simmering or braising because they’re made from cast iron, which distributes heat evenly and retains heat better than stainless steel stockpots or saucepans. Plus, their large capacity holds a lot of soup, making them a great option for preparing large batches for meal planning or freezer prep.

Is it OK to boil water in a Dutch oven?

Yes, it’s perfectly OK to boil water in a Dutch oven. Most brands are heat-resistant up to 450°F, so you can definitely use it to boil water, broth or stock. However, a common Dutch oven mistake is to heat it up dry, which could crack the enamel.

What are the best gluten-free Dutch oven soup recipes?

All your favorite gluten-free soup recipes can be made in a Dutch oven. Try making recipes like beefy sweet potato soup, spicy chili, butternut squash or sausage soup. For an international flavor profile, try making Italian white bean soup, Caribbean potato soup or Mexican chicken corn chowder—just make sure the recipe doesn’t have any added flour or gluten-containing ingredients.
