This recipe makes 5 apple pie cinnamon rolls.

Ingredients

  • 1 package canned cinnamon rolls with icing
  • 1/3 cup apple butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice

Editor’s Tip: For best results, opt for a package of jumbo cinnamon rolls (e.g., Pillsbury Grands) that typically come with five rolls in a can.

Directions

Step 1: Spread rolls with apple butter

Preheat the oven to 350°F (or to the temperature listed on the cinnamon roll package directions).

Open the can of cinnamon rolls as directed. Then, carefully unroll the dough on a clean surface and spread the apple butter over the top in an even layer.

Step 2: Reroll and separate

Gently roll the dough back up and then separate along the perforated lines. Arrange the rolls in an ungreased, 9-inch round baking pan.

Editor’s Tip: If you’re having trouble separating the dough after rerolling it, use a knife to slice cleanly through the dough. You can also try using dental floss, one of our favorite cinnamon roll-making tips.

Step 3: Pour on the cream and bake

Pour the heavy cream over and around the cinnamon rolls, then bake according to the cinnamon roll package directions (usually 15-20 minutes).

Step 4: Mix the icing

Meanwhile, mix the apple pie spice into the cinnamon roll icing. Set aside.

Step 5: Drizzle and serve

Remove the cinnamon rolls from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes in the pan. To finish, drizzle the apple pie-spiced icing over the warm cinnamon rolls, then serve immediately. Enjoy! Next, learn how to make apple pie with cheese.

Editor’s Tip: We know waiting is hard. Especially when it looks and smells this good. Trust us, waiting a couple minutes for the freshly baked cinnamon rolls to cool is worth it. The wait ensures they’re at the perfect temperature for spreading the icing. Any sooner, and the icing will melt and slide off the rolls into a sad puddle.

Here’s What We Thought

Move over, pumpkin recipes! Apple pie cinnamon rolls have stolen our hearts (and stomachs) this fall.

Having already tested pouring heavy cream over cinnamon rolls, we knew these buns would be ultra-soft and tender. What we didn’t know was that the simple addition of apple butter and apple pie spice would elevate everyday cinnamon rolls to total fall nirvana.

We can confidently say that these apple pie cinnamon rolls will be on regular rotation this season. Next time, we will experiment by topping the rolls with a scoop of homemade apple pie filling and a handful of chopped cinnamon-spiced pecans.
