Living in a sports city, I’ve seen the most extravagant, tricked-out tailgate setups in the parking lot of our football stadium. Think: grills, TVs, couches. While they’re impressive, I know firsthand that these things are not required to have a good time before the game. All you really need are drinks, a few games, someone’s open car trunk and easy tailgate food (no cooking required since we don’t have a portable grill!) to get into the spirit.

Here, you’ll find food ideas perfect for a no-frills, grill-less tailgate. The food should be portable, dippable, and best served at room temperature or cold in a good cooler. For example, if you have to break out a fork and knife to eat it, leave it at home. If it has to be thrown on a grill or warmed in a Crockpot, pick a different recipe. Instead, dips and homemade chips, party snack mixes, cold sandwiches, wraps and hand-held desserts are the easy tailgate foods we’re going for here.

Tailgates can start early. Like, early early. That’s why we picked out a lot of recipes that can be assembled the day before and hold their integrity well at room temperature or in the cooler. And when the big game finally rolls around, remake one or two recipes to add to your Super Bowl party food to memorialize your tailgate(s) past.
