Crockpot Chicken Soup FAQ

Is soup better in a slow cooker?

It’s not better or worse, but it is different. The major benefit of a slow cooker is that you can start your chicken soup in the morning, leave it alone for a bunch of hours, and return to a delicious meal. Plus, the lengthy cooking time allows plenty of opportunity for flavors to meld.

Dutch oven soup recipes are better when you need to cook ingredients for different lengths of time.

Can you overcook soup in a Crockpot?

Yes, you can. Vegetables and starchy ingredients can get mushy when cooked for too long (pasta and rice are big culprits), and meats can become tough if they spend extra time in the heat. For best results, follow the recipe as is.

What’s the best way to layer ingredients in a slow cooker?

Most recipes list ingredients in order of how they should go in the slow cooker. Generally, you place items that take longer to cook on the bottom and sides of the slow cooker, and more delicate or finely chopped items (like mirepoix and other aromatics) in the center. However you layer the ingredients, though, make sure not to overfill the Crock-Pot. Overfilling could lead to ingredients not reaching the correct internal temperature because they’ve cooked unevenly.
