Here’s the Right Way to Make a Vodka Soda

When you’re in the mood for a simple cocktail, there’s no better option than the classic vodka soda. They’re made with only a few high-quality ingredients and are sugar-free, so you won’t (or, at least, you’re less likely to) wake up with a huge headache. Here’s our favorite way to make a vodka soda, plus some tips for making the best beverage possible.

Ingredients Matter

Since there are so few ingredients—and not much for them to hide behind—their quality will really affect this cocktail’s overall flavor. Grab a fresh lime over bottled juice, then make sure your club soda is fresh and fizzy and that you actually like the vodka you’re using. Not sure which vodka is best for you? How to Make a Vodka Soda

This quick and easy cocktail comes together with just a few ingredients. We’re using club soda, a carbonated water that has salt additives like baking soda or potassium bicarbonate. Club soda is slightly different from tonic water or soda water, so double check your can before pouring. You can learn about the difference between these three beverages here.

What You’ll Need:

• Ice
• 1½ ounce vodka, chilled
• ½ an ounce lime juice
• 4 ounces club soda, chilled
• 1 lime wedge

Yield: 1 cocktail

Instructions

Step 1: Mix

Add some ice to a highball glass. Then, pour in your vodka, lime juice and soda water, gently mixing with a spoon to combine.

Editor’s tip: Swirl a long-handled bar spoon like this ($13 for 2) around the inside edge of your glass to keep the club soda from getting too fizzy.

Step 2: Garnish

Pop the lime wedge on the rim of the glass and enjoy!

Editor’s tip: If you’re not a huge fan of lime, feel free to substitute lemon for the juice and wedge. Some bartenders actually favor lemon over lime in this cocktail, and will serve it that way at their bar.

How much alcohol is in a vodka soda?

It depends on the proportions that are used, but this recipe uses 1½ ounces of vodka for an ABV of about 10%.

How many calories are in a vodka soda?

The calorie count for this cocktail depends on which brand of vodka you use (the higher the ABV, the higher the calorie count) but most will result in 90-100 calories per serving.

French 75 French 75 was a drink created at Harry's New York Bar, which is located in Paris France, during WWI. The original version of the drink had a powerful kick, like French 75 mm artillery gun. The version here uses less gin. Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker three-fourths full with ice. Add 3/4 of an ounce of gin, 1 tablespoon of confectioners' sugar or simple syrup and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice; cover and shake 10-15 seconds or until condensation forms on the outside of the shaker.
