No-Fuss Avocado Onion Salad

My mother, Nena, grew up in Cuba and learned many styles of cooking. She had a knack for making something incredibly simple taste amazing. This salad is proof. By itself, the dressing is really tart, but add the avocados and onions and it's the perfect complement. —Marina Castle Kelley, Canyon Country, California

  • 3 medium ripe avocados, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 large sweet onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup stone-ground mustard
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey


  • Arrange avocado and onion slices on a large platter. In a small bowl, whisk remaining ingredients; drizzle over salad. Serve immediately.

    Amazing quick salad!! Made with a really ripe avocado, dressing was perfectly balanced.

    Unconventional to be sure. Absolutely not the same old lettuce & tomato deal. I had no idea what the reaction to this mixture would be and wondered if I should really serve it as I mixed it, but what a WONDERFUL side dish and my family told me to make it again sometime! I made the recipe exactly as written but I seemed to have almost a quarter cup of dressing that pooled at the bottom of the bowl before serving. I might possibly cut back on the amount of dressing next time or just drain off the excess. Also was well-received at a Cinco de Mayo party last week!

    With so few ingredients, I don't know what I could have done wrong, but this didn't work for us at all.

    Fixed this for lunch, it was sooooo good my sister asked me for the recipe! This was the first time I had made it so guess it is a keeper!! I loved it too.

    This is the most awesome salad ever! I made this for our Memorial Day BBQ and I got complaints.......that there wasn't enough! I could have easily doubled this and still not have had any leftovers. Just as several other reviewers stated, I too was hesitant after tasting the dressing on it's own as it is very tart and mustardy. I was concerned about ruining perfectly good avocados and Maui onions. Don't give that a thought! I have no idea how the veggies temper the dressing but together they are magical. This is a summertime keeper!

    This was an awesome side dish and super simple to put together. I was a bit hestitant after tasting the dressing. It was a quite tart alone but quite an enhancement to the avocado and onion.
