Chinese Hot Mustard

    1/2 cup


  • 1/4 cup ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 2 teaspoons canola oil


  • In a small bowl, combine the mustard, sugar and salt. Stir in water and oil until smooth. Refrigerate until serving.

    I believe the 1/4 cup ground mustard is the actual mustard powder, not prepared mustard in a jar. That should result in a hot mustard.

    Are you using Coleman's ?? I buy hot mustard powder from Penzey's.? Either the Canadian or Canadian Oriental which is the more hot of the two.? Definitely HOT. Perhaps yours is old. mustard doesn't have a very long shelf life, as evidenced by the ex-date on brands such as Grey Poupon in ready made.? Perhaps that's the case in the dry powder as well.? Just a thought.

    I'm left wondering if there is an ingredient missing from this listed recipe. I've made it twice now, and there is nothing hot about it. Nor does it bear any resemblance to any Chinese Hot Mustard I've ever had. Disappointed.
