Sugarless Applesauce

"A friend gave me this delicious recipe 20 years ago, and I've made applesauce this way ever since," informs Margery Bryan of Royal City, Washington. "We grow a lot of apples in this area and have fun putting this crop to good use."

    4 cups


  • 8 cups sliced peeled tart apples
  • 1/2 to 1 can (12 ounces) diet white soda
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


  • In a saucepan over medium heat, cook apples, soda and cinnamon until apples are tender, about 45 minutes. Serve warm or cold.

    I like more cinnamon so ended up doubling the amount to get the taste that I like.

    I made this for my daughter and she didn't know it didn't have sugar in it, she loved it. From now on it's the only way I'll make applesauce.

    I had lite ginger ale so I used that. I don't like cinnamon applesauce and left it out. I don't see a lot of difference between using soda and using the same amount of water with a little lemon instead. Seems to come out the same.

    What type of diet white soda do you use - 7 up or diet rite?
