Ingredients

  • 1 package (16 ounces) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or teriyaki sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch
  • Sliced green onions, optional

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°. Blot tofu dry. Cut into 3/4-in. cubes. Place on a clean kitchen towel; cover with another towel. Place a cutting board on top; gently place a large cast iron skillet on top. Let stand 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a shallow dish, whisk together soy sauce, olive oil, sesame oil, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Place cornstarch in a separate shallow dish. Add tofu to soy mixture; turn to coat. Add tofu, a few pieces at a time, to the cornstarch; toss to coat. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake until cubes are golden brown and crispy, 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through. Garnish with green onions, if desired.
Crispy Baked Tofu Tips

How do you keep tofu crispy?

This tofu recipe gets nice and crispy in the oven. Baking at 400° for 25 to 30 minutes is the perfect sweet spot. Plus, blotting the tofu dry like we recommend helps yield crispy results. If your tofu still isn't as crispy as you like, we have a few other suggestions to avoid soggy tofu.

How can you make crispy baked tofu your own?

You can add whatever spices you like to this plant-based meat substitute. One of our favorite combinations is tossing tofu in tapioca starch, then dredging it in egg, milk and paprika, and dropping it in panko bread crumbs, garlic, basil and oregano. Other ideas include Asian-style tofu, buffalo tofu and tofu with black pepper sauce, although we have plenty of other tofu recipes that will inspire you!

How else can you cook crispy tofu?

Make crispy tofu in the air fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 375°, then, after cubing, blotting and seasoning the tofu, place the tofu on the tray, leaving space around all sides of each piece. (If all of the cubes won’t fit with space for air to circulate, cook them in multiple batches.) Cook the tofu for 12 minutes without shifting it, until golden brown and crispy on all sides.

What do you serve with crispy baked tofu?

Serve crispy baked tofu with a side of roasted vegetables and cilantro-lime rice for a well-rounded and tasty meal.

How long does crispy baked tofu last?

Crispy baked tofu lasts for about 3 to 5 days when stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
