These cookies have become somewhat famous at the school our children attend. One year, I made more than 150 of these "fingers" for their classroom Halloween parties.—Natalie Hyde, Cambridge, Ontario

Frightening Fingers Recipe
  • Prep: 25 min. + chilling Bake: 20 min.
  • Yield: 30 Servings
25 20 45

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Red decorating gel
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds

Directions

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in the egg and extracts. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Divide dough into fourths. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.
  • Working with one piece of dough at a time, roll into 1-in. balls. Shape balls into 3-in. x 1/2-in. fingers. Using the flat tip of a table knife, make an indentation on one end of each for fingernail. With a knife, make three slashes in the middle of each finger for knuckle.
  • Place 2 in. apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 325° for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 3 minutes. Squeeze a small amount of red gel on nail bed; press a sliced almond over gel for nail, allowing gel to ooze around nail. Remove to wire racks to cool. Yield: about 5 dozen cookies.

One of my favorites. Easy to make and everyone loves them! The perfect degree of creepiness for Halloween. I just wish I could make them all year long! However, although they look great, I'm not that fond of the flavor personally.

These cookies are great for all kids, young and old. I made a batch of these when I was working with my church youth group, and the teens just loved them. They didn't think they were eatible at first! So I ate one and showed them they were really cookies. Some of the girls still wouldn't try one. They look so real...how fun!

I first made these for my book group's review of "Devil in the White City" They have been a favorite of my daughters for Halloween ever since. They are almost too real for some. (Husband and son). Giant Gold Star for the person who developed the "creep-tacutlar" idea!

These turned out great! They are not as sweet as some sugar cookies.

Love this recipe! Easy to make and everyone raves about them. I tint the dough green for witches fingers.

I make these cookies for our church coffee hour between services on Sunday. Although a mostly adult group, everyone goes crazy over them and they taste great too!

I found this recipe years ago and have been making them every Halloween since. They are just too cute and the cookie recipe is very good. Love the almond flavor. Definitely a 5 star recipe and very easy to make!

I was looking through your recipes and came across this one.I too have been making these for years and they are always a big hit at Halloween parties. They are always requested by friends. The grandchildren love them. I give them a 5 star rating.

I have made these cookies several years. When my granddaughter was in 3rd grade I took a batch to her Halloween party at school. The boys loved them. Halloween is a favorite holiday for me. It is so fun to make something spooky. Maybe I am strange, but at 70 years old I will probably still celebrate. I am thinking of making these with the grandkids when I "baby"sit tomorrow with them. They are now 7, 8, and 10. What a fun recipe.
