These cookies were the treat we would enjoy when we traveled on family shopping trips to Ft. Worth many years ago. My sister, Carrie, always made them and put them in a foil-covered shoe box. By the time we got to Ft. Worth, they were all gone! Now my daughter makes these cookies for me, and at the age of 90, I still think they are the greatest treat.

Didn't have dark brown sugar, so i used light and rolled the ball in cinnamon and sugar and then pressed down on pan. They turned out delicious! Only thing is, I got 26 cookies out of my batch... not 42. But they were nice size and very good!

Just pulled these out of the oven. What a great cookie these turned out to be. I wanted to make cookies today, but had only a few ingredients in my pantry (thats nothing new) so this fit the bill. I made a few moderations such as adding a tablespoon of maple syrup and using light brown sugar (cause thats what I had) instead of dark. I also rolled the cookies into balls and then rolled them through sugar just before baking. Word to the wise, these spread more than I thought they would, but they are not pancake like or even crispy for that matter. They have a nice crunch on the outer edge and then a surprisingly chewy, soft center. These cookies may be simple and plain, they are not drenched in name brand chocolate or praised by a famous television chef, but can stand by themselves for just having good flavor. They also seem to have a warm hospitable, curl up with a book & milk type feeling to them. Next time I would try using the dark brown sugar and maybe adding some cinnamon to the rolling sugar, but Im definitely going to keep the maple syrup addition.Once again thanks Taste of Home for another awesome recipe to brighten my day (and my boyfriends when he gets home).
