Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe

Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe photo by Taste of Home Rating 5

The inspiration for this cake came from one of my favorite flowers, the sunflower. The yellow peeps make eye-catching flower petals, and I carefully placed chocolate chips in a circular pattern to resemble the seeds in the middle of a sunflower. This cake is easy, but looks quite impressive. —Bethany Eledge, Cleveland, Tennessee

Peeps Sunflower Cake Recipe
  • Prep: 15 min. Bake: 30 min. + cooling
  • Yield: 12 Servings
15 30 45

Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix (regular size)
  • 2 cans (16 ounces each) chocolate frosting
  • 19 to 20 yellow chick Peeps candies
  • 1-1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  • Prepare and bake cake mix according to package directions, using two parchment paper-lined and greased 9-in. round baking pans. Cool in pans 10 minutes before removing to wire racks; remove paper. Cool completely.
  • If cake layers have rounded tops, trim with a long serrated knife to make level. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake.
  • For petals, arrange Peeps around edge of cake, curving slightly and being careful not to separate chicks. For sunflower seeds, arrange chocolate chips in center of cake. Yield: 12 servings.

This was the hit dessert of our Easter brunch. I used raspberry jam in the middle of the cake to make it extra special.

I made this as an Easter dessert. Rather than a yellow cake with canned chocolate frosting, I used Ghirardelli 'Ultimate Fudge Brownie' mix to make a single 9-inch brownie and used the glaze packet from the brownies. I only needed 16 (not 19) Peeps. The cake looked fabulous and was a big hit. I had no problem with the Peeps sliding.

I did this with a white cake mix but can't use any chocolate so I used a buttercream colored a light brown. I can out really nice.

I love sunflowers and my husband loves peeps , so I knew I had to make this cake. It was so easy to make. Looked just like the picture. I placed the peeps inward more not right on the edge and they stayed fine. Can't wait to try different color peeps and cake choices.

I made this tonight...couldnt find jumbo chocolate chips which is what a friend suggested I use to save time, so I used hershey kisses instead. Turned out great!

Wish i would have read the reviews first. My peeps are sliding off even with tooth picks. Should have put them up father on the cake.

I made a test cake for a goodbye party and everyone at work thought it was very clever. I'm taking it to our Easter dinner this Sunday. I too used toothpicks to hold the Peeps in place--I think the problem is putting them too close to the edge.
