Christmas Star Twisted Bread

Swirled with jam, this sweet beauty may look tricky, but it’s not. The best part is opening the oven to find this freshly baked star bread in all its glory. —Darlene Brenden, Salem, Oregon

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 3/4 cup warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup seedless raspberry jam
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Confectioners' sugar


  • Dissolve yeast in warm water until foamy. In another bowl, combine milk, egg, butter, sugar and salt; add yeast mixture and 3 cups flour. Beat on medium speed until smooth, about 1 minute. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch down dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 4 portions. Roll 1 portion into a 12-in. circle. Place on a greased 14-in. pizza pan. Spread with one-third of the jam to within 1/2 in. of edge. Repeat twice, layering dough and jam, and ending with final portion of dough.
  • Place a 2-1/2-in. round cutter on top of the dough in center of circle (do not press down). With a sharp knife, make 16 evenly spaced cuts from round cutter to edge of dough, forming a starburst. Remove cutter; grasp 2 adjacent strips and rotate twice outward. Pinch ends together. Repeat with remaining strips.
  • Cover and let rise until almost doubled, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°. Bake until golden brown, 18-22 minutes. (Watch during final 5 minutes for any dripping.) Remove from oven; brush with melted butter, avoiding areas where jam is visible. Cool completely on a wire rack. Dust with confectioners' sugar.

      The video showing how to twist the break was super helpful to me. I used a little bit too much jam, so it was a bit messy, but this is delicious. I'm thinking it would be great to serve at a brunch. The whole family loved this!

      so much easier than I thought, Video was a big help on how to twist it. Really turned out great. lovely and actually felt good to make it. Gave it as a gift so hope it tasted ok. thanks, loved it. great recipe. Ok update, the neighbors that got this lovely bread LOVED it, Said it was very tasty and great taste. I used Strawberry Jam, what I had on hand. Really great receips.

      So I did a new thing yesterday.... I love to bake bread. And I love to try new recipes. When I saw this Twisted Christmas Star Bread on the front cover of the #TasteofHome magazine, I knew I had to make it! Wish I could share a photo here! I made it with blackberry preserves and it was delicious! Can’t wait to make it for Christmas Day! ????????

      I have made this bread many times and a little dusting of powdered (icing) sugar covers a lot of little mistakes. I have used raspberry jam for the filling as well as butter topped with cinnamon and sugar. Be sure not to go overboard with the filling or it gets a little sloppy to do the twists.

      Reading that it's not overly flavorful, I was just thinking about incorporating cream cheese in with the jam. I do this with other bread recipes. So what do you think?

      This recipe was so delicious! While it does look a little intimidating, it is pretty simple and the flavor is amazing! Seriously, it was the hit of our Christmas Brunch this year. I will definitely be making it again and testing different jam flavors!

      I reviewed this nearly a year ago and wanted to review again. This year I added cinnamon to the dough. Family loved it. Making the star design is fun to do. Seeing the video helped tremendously.

      Be sure to read through the directions thoroughly before starting to form the star shape. The end result tastes great and is beautiful!
