"I’ve always liked sloppy joes but was feeling that my own recipe lacked character. Then a co-worker shared hers with me, and I guarantee I’ll never go back! Grape jelly adds a hint of sweetness to this fun, flavorful mixture, but I often use more than called for because my husband likes his extra sweet," shares Jessica Mergen from Cuba City, Wisconsin.

Tip

Quick Homemade Croutons

I hate to waste the heel from a loaf of bread or a few leftover hot dog or hamburger buns. So I cube them into a bowl, spray them with nonstick cooking spray and season with garlic powder, parsley and basil or oregano. Then I bake them on a cookie sheet at 250° until they’re crisp and brown. My family loves the quick homemade croutons. —Nancy C., Windermere, Florida

My family loves this recipe. We've been making it for years now. It is a bit sweet, I make a spicy sloppy joe recipe too when I'm feeling bold. However, this is our go-to family recipe 99% of the time because our 4 year old just loves it and he isn't much of a meat eater so this recipe is a keeper for us!

My son hates sloppy joes. When I saw this recipe it reminded me of the cocktail meatballs he loves. I made them and he loved them! I make them for parties all the time and people quite often ask me for the recipe. I often increase the recipe and portion it out to freeze. A quick and simple meal on hand when you need it!

Though the concept of a sloppy joe recipe with grape jelly in it is interesting, we found the sauce to have an odd flavor--too sweet and something else we couldn't put our fingers on.

My son is gluten intolerant so I substituted the tomato soup with tomato sauce. It was delicious! This is a recipe that will be put in our family favorites. We all liked it much better than the store bought canned sloppy joe sauces that tend to be too tangy. It brought my daughter out of her room upstairs when she smelled it simmering!

not a favorite with my family

Made a 5x batch for our church potluck. To reduce the sugar, I left out the brown sugar and used sugar free grape jelly. (There is still the high fructose corn syrup in the tomato soup and ketchup - so it's not "sugar free") Kids and adults both loved it. They cleaned up every drop.

These sloppy joes were very good. However we thought the mustard flavor was a bit too strong at first. I simply added an extra tablespoon of grape jelly and it evened the taste right out. The end result was satisfying. Will make again with this adjustment and yes much better than the can that you buy at the store.

This is a very tasty & simple sloppy joe recipe to make and MUCH better than what you would purchase in the can at the grocery store. It has a sweet flavor that my whole family loved. This has been made several times and is always a winner in my house.
