Ingredients

  • 1 package white cake mix (regular size)
  • 1-1/4 cups water
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 cup coarsely crushed cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies (about 8)
  • FROSTING:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 to 4-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oreo cookies and crushed Oreo cookies, optional

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, water, oil and egg whites; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on high for 2 minutes. Gently fold in crushed cookies.
  • Pour into two greased and floured 9-in. round baking pans. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
  • For frosting, beat the shortening, sugar, milk and vanilla in another large bowl until smooth. Spread frosting between layers and over top and sides of cake. Decorate the top with cookies and the sides with crushed cookies if desired. Yield: 12 servings.

I used commercial frosting instead of the recipe. If i'm going to use commercial cake then i want it to be easy all the way around. I made this cake for my hubby's birthday as he is an oreo fiend. I wasn't really impressed with the cake but then i don't care of white cake as a rule. If i could find a nice moist white cake recipe like i have for chocolate perhaps that would be different. However, overall this was a very nice fancy cake and i can see me making it again.

Frosting if very sweet; while I was assembling it, my sister said that I should have doubled the frosting...no way, just fine the way it is!

this cake is really, really awesomely swell.

make sure that you use shortening and flour to grease the pans... we didn't and it came out in clumps... (and then I threw icing at my brother!!- which was really fun) So we ate it in bowls - FANTASTIC.

My kids love this cake, but they mostly eat the oreos ... it looks impressive for how little work it is. I sometimes crush up some oreos and put them in half of the batter.

Was very easy to make. Everyone loved it. But I added my own filling between the layers of cake. Instead of just the plain frosting, I added in with the frosting more crushed cookies but I might try more of a chocolate filling next time to bring out more chocolate flavor.

I made this cake for Luke's 10th b-day. It has now become everybody's cake of choice for b-day treat.

My son picked this cake out for his birthday. He loved the Oreos, but the cake was not really eaten. Definately tasted like a "cake mix" cake too. I might try this idea again with a homemade cake. It really does look decadent, though.
