Is there a peach or two turning from ripe to overripe on your counter? Turn that fruit into a juicy peach margarita.

Updated: May 06, 2024

Nothing says “summer” more than a peach margarita! OK, maybe peach pie. Regardless, make the most of peach season with this fresh margarita recipe served on the rocks. It’s a quick drink (you don’t even have to make simple syrup) and can easily be riffed on to make the flavor uniquely yours.

Ingredients:

  • Peach wedges: Use a peach that is ripe or, even better, very ripe. The riper the peach, the sweeter and more flavorful it will be.
  • Blanco tequila: Use an affordable silver or blanco tequila. There are lots of tequilas for margaritas to choose from!
  • Lime juice: Fresh citrus is a must. Pick up a couple of limes, and juice them yourself.
  • Peach schnapps liqueur: This is added to enhance the flavor of the natural peach. If you don’t have peach schnapps (or don’t want to buy a bottle), use triple sec instead.
  • Kosher salt and sugar: These are optional for the rim of the glass.
  • Ice: You’ll need ice cubes for shaking and for your final pour.

Directions

Step 1: Rim the glass

If desired, moisten the of your margarita glass with a peach wedge. Sprinkle equal amounts of salt and sugar on a small plate, and dip the rim of the glass in the mixture. Fill the glass with ice, and set aside.

Editor’s Tip: Prep the glass for this peach margarita before you make the drink. Once you’re done shaking up the cocktail, you can pour it into the glass right away instead of allowing the cocktail to dilute in the shaker while you prep the glass.

Step 2: Muddle the peach

Muddle the peach wedges in an empty cocktail shaker until juicy.

Editor’s Tip: If the peach is a little firm and not wanting to muddle, add a sprinkle of sugar—that will help macerate the fruit.

Step 3: Shake the peach margarita

Add the tequila, lime juice and peach schnapps to the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice. Cover and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds.

Step 4: Strain and garnish

Strain the margarita into the prepared rocks glass. If desired, garnish with a peach wedge.

Editor’s Tip: You can leave your peach wedge with the skin on or off—your preference.

Peach Margarita Variations

  • Herby peach margarita: Add a few large basil leaves or mint leaves to the shaker while muddling the peach.
  • Spicy peach margarita: Add a pinch of cayenne to the shaker or a few slices of jalapeno to the peach while muddling it. A fruity take on the spicy margarita!
  • Blended peach margarita: Instead of using a fresh peach, use a cup of frozen peaches, and blend everything together in a blender.
  • Ginger-peach margarita: Swap out the peach schnapps for ginger liqueur.

Can you make peach margaritas ahead of time?

No, we don’t recommend making peach margaritas ahead of time. Since this recipe uses fresh peach, it’s best to make and serve the peach margarita immediately. For a margarita you can make ahead, try our margarita pitcher recipe.

Peach Margarita Tips

What goes on the rim of a peach margarita?

We recommend rimming the glass with a combination of kosher salt and sugar. Feel free to add some warming spices to the mix for an added boost of flavor.

My peach isn’t very ripe. What should I do?

You can do a few things. First, use it anyway and add a bit of peach jam to the mix. You can also skip the peach and the schnapps and add 2 ounces of peach juice or puree. And finally, you can make a blended peach margarita by using the under-ripe peach or 1 cup frozen peaches.
