People Are Making Christmas Stars with Clothes Hangers—Here’s How

Much like my mother, I can’t seem to get into the Christmas spirit until I’ve covered my entire house in decorations. Ribbon, garland, cards, snowflakes, and even some vintage decorations from Grandma’s house—everything must have a place! And while it can be time-consuming, it’s always worth the hard work. There’s nothing like sitting around on a snowy winter’s night with twinkling lights, a brand new Netflix Christmas movie and a melting mug of hot cocoa bombs.

This year, I’m delving into the realm of DIY. So when I saw the giant clothes hanger Christmas star, I KNEW I had to give it a shot!

How to Make a Clothes Hanger Christmas Star

It’s actually a fairly simple process with a lot of room for creative control. This particular DIY tutorial comes from YouTube user juNxtaposition, and it’s absolutely genius and budget-friendly. Two of our favorite things!

For each star, you’ll need:

• 10 plastic clothes hangers
• 1 bag zip ties

The easiest way to work on this project will be on the floor. First, grab two hangers and place them together to make a point. (It’s hard to describe, but watch the video and it will make perfect sense!) Repeat this four more times until you have five pairs in a general circle.

Once your hangers are in place, grab your zip ties! You’ll want to secure each pair to each other as well as each adjacent pair. Make sure to keep your zip ties loose until you’ve gone around the entire star. This is to ensure maneuverability.

Once everything’s secured, go ahead and tighten each tie, move the pieces around as you like and snip the excess zip tie. In almost no time at all, you’ve created a gorgeous DIY clothes hanger Christmas star to hang with the rest of your outdoor decorations.

Remember to Switch It Up

While some may people may prefer a classic white star or snowflakes, feel free to decorate as you see fit. Add glitter, lights and ribbons for a splash of color. You can even buy different colored hangers with different designs for an entirely different feel!
