Like all our taste tests, our team shopped for popular products you can find at the grocery store. Our team prepped each according to package directions. The brand identities were kept a secret until after all were sampled, and each was judged according to these categories:
- Appearance: Sweet potato fries should be a warm copper color. Our team also looked for options that looked tasty on the plate with consistent shapes.
- Texture: This is a big one. Often times sweet potato fries—be they fresh or frozen—lack crunch. Our team wanted to find brands that crisped up well and would hold up to dunking in ketchup.

All of our testers were very impressed with how well these fries baked in the oven. Many samples were a little limp or soft, but not these! “These have such a nice, crisp exterior with a creamy interior,” explains the Test Kitchen’s Mark Neufang.
These frozen sweet potato fries from Ore-Ida maintain that velvety texture that we love about sweet potatoes while still giving you that snackable crunch. While these are good on their own, Mark suggests trying these fries dipped in aioli—garlic aioli if you’ve got it!

In our test, Alexia Waffle Cut Sweet Potato Fries were a standout in all the best ways.
First off, the waffle shape was a huge hit among our testers. This cut allows the fries to really crisp up well in the oven and makes them sturdy enough for dipping into ketchup or your condiment of choice.
But these fries are so much more than a fun and functional shape—they also taste fantastic. The sweet potato base is flavored with a blend of spices including garlic, onion, chili pepper and cumin. “The seasonings make all the difference,” says Josh Rink in the Test Kitchen.

Can’t resist a crinkle-cut fry? Get your fix in sweet potato form with McCain Sweet Potato Crinkle Fries.
These frozen fries have a vibrant orange hue and look delicious once they come out of the oven. While they do have a hint of salt already in the recipe, an extra sprinkle takes these fries over the top.
“These have a really nice flavor—pleasantly sweet and robust,” says Mark. He says they could be a bit crispier, though. If you want to crisp up these fries a bit more, give them another few minutes in the oven or try an air fryer.
