Looking for the Best Gluten-Free Bread

Gluten-free eaters know that finding good dupes for classic baked goods can be a challenge—especially the basics like sandwich bread. You may not have the time (or patience!) to find the best gluten-free bread on your own, so our Test Kitchen is here to help.

Our team sought to find reliably good options to pop in your toaster, pack in your lunch box or toss on the griddle.

How We Tested Gluten-Free Bread

While the bread aisle at the grocery store may be packed with plenty of gluten-full options, the gluten-free field is a bit narrower. Despite this smaller pool of options, our team snagged eight different gluten-free sandwich breads to sample in this test.

Like all our taste tests, each option was sampled blindly. Our pros judged each slice based on the following:

  • Appearance: Slices of store-bought bread—gluten-free or otherwise—should look uniform and satisfying.
  • Texture: Texture is so challenging to get right with gluten-free foods. Our team wanted to find a bread with the right amount of chew and airiness. Gritty, dry or overly gummy bakes won’t get a good score in our Test Kitchen.
  • Flavor: Our best gluten-free bread picks should taste yeasty and delicious. There should be no artificial or off flavors. Notes of seeds and whole grains, though, are welcome.

Eight brands were part of this test; just three were named Test Kitchen-Preferred. Check out our best gluten-free bread picks!

Best Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread

Sam’s Choice Gluten-Free Multigrain Bread

If building the perfect sandwich is a part of your lunchtime routine, try Sam’s Choice Gluten-Free Multigrain Bread, a Walmart-exclusive brand.

This soft, GF loaf is exactly what you’d expect to find in the bread aisle. It’s akin to many go-to brands for gluten-filled bagged bread brands like Brownberry or Pepperidge Farm.

This bread is light with just the right amount of chew. Thanks to the gluten-free multigrain flour (including sorghum flour and millet flour) and seeds, this bread is a great foundation for any lunch. “I’d use this for a nice, sturdy sandwich,” says Taste of Home Content Director (and gluten-free eater) Ellie Martin Cliffe.

Toast this bread and pile it high with cold cuts, crunchy veggies and satisfying spreads like a flavored aioli.

Best Gluten-Free White Bread

Canyon Bakehouse 7-Grain Gluten-Free Bread

It’s especially hard to approximate white bread when going gluten-free. Since white bread uses all-purpose flour exclusively, finding the right swap for a GF diet can be a challenge. But you’ll find a great almost white bread with Canyon Bakehouse 7-Grain Gluten-Free Bread.

Despite the seven grains inside (those grains are rice,  sorghum, millet, teff, quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat), this bread has a white bread-like flavor. “It’s the whitest of the loaves we tried,” explains our Test Kitchen’s Mark Neufang. “It has a nice golden exterior with a spongy, white interior crumb.”

“If you eat gluten-free and want a nice white bread for a sandwich, this one will do nicely,” he says.

And if you prefer your slices served up alongside eggs in the morning, this is also a great loaf to try. “My mind immediately goes to buttered toast with this one,” says Ellie.

Best Slightly Sweet Gluten-Free Bread

Udi’s Gluten-Free Whole Grain Sandwich Bread

While a good multigrain bread or sturdy slice might be just right for your lunchtime sandwiches, sometimes you want to find a loaf that’s a bit sweeter. That’s where Udi’s Gluten-Free Whole Grain Sandwich Bread comes in.

From the jump, this bread was a winner in our Test Kitchen’s eyes. “It’s attractive and homemade-looking,” according to Ellie. This Udi’s loaf has a nice domed top and golden exterior.

This bread is slightly dense (common with many gluten-free bakes) and moist with just the right amount of chew. Our testing crew also picked up on notes of applesauce-like sweetness. “The sweet flavor has me thinking this would be lovely for French toast or in a bread pudding,” says Ellie.

Don’t let these mentions of sweetness put you off this bread for other applications, though. “I’d use this for a sandwich!” says Sarah Tramonte in the Test Kitchen.
