Who Makes the Best Store-Bought Hummus?
Sure, you can make an amazing homemade hummus, but when you’re looking for a simple snack or are prepping for a big party, the best store-bought hummus is the way to go.
Wondering which hummus to put out for your next shindig? Our Test Kitchen and Taste of Home editors put 10 brands to the test!
How We Sampled Hummus
For this taste test, our Test Kitchen sourced 10 different brands of hummus. For consistency in this test, our pros picked up classic hummus (though we know flavored hummus is also delicious!). The brand of each hummus was kept a secret during testing. Each hummus was sampled and judged according to these categories:
- Texture: Getting the right texture with hummus is a trick! Our tasters wanted to find a hummus that was smooth but not mushy, pasty or baby food-like. It should also have a good consistency for scooping up onto a pita chip or slice of cucumber.
- Flavor: Traditional hummus consists of chickpeas, tahini, oil, salt and a squeeze of lemon. Some brands may add in a dash of garlic or pepper. Overall, though, the flavor should be tasty and versatile enough for dipping veggies, smearing on sandwiches and more.
Here’s our shortlist of the best store-bought hummus brands. Be sure to read our full reviews below.
- Best Organic: Cedar’s
- Best with Veggies: Tribe
- Tangiest: 365 by Whole Foods Market
- Budget-Friendly: Marketside
Best Organic Hummus
Cedar’s Organic Original Hommus
Without a doubt, our testers’ favorite organic snack is Cedar’s Organic Original Hommus. This hummus is made with organic everything—from chickpeas to garlic to extra virgin olive oil.
But this dip’s organic pedigree isn’t the only aspect worthy of our team’s praise. Cedar’s hummus has a delightfully creamy texture with hints of garlic—precisely the combo that keeps you coming back for more.
According to Senior Editor Lara Eucalano, “I could finish off a container of this hummus with a bag of pita chips with no problem.”
Best Hummus for Veggies
Tribe Classic Hummus
If you find yourself reaching for a bag of baby carrots or bell pepper strips with your hummus, take note of Tribe Classic Hummus. Our testers voted this the best brand for enjoying with your farmers market haul.
Tribe’s traditional hummus recipe has that creamy chickpea taste we all look for but is accented with a bit of acid and garlic. These components come together as a dip that just seems better when paired with cucumbers and cherry tomatoes.
Best Tangy Hummus
365 by Whole Foods Market Original Hummus
Lemon lends a tangy flavor to traditional hummus. Our snacking pros’ favorite lemon-forward dip is definitely 365 by Whole Foods Market Original Hummus.
In addition to a pleasant lemon flavor, this dip also has hints of paprika and cumin to liven it up. Texture-wise, this brand is smooth without being pasty—perfect for dipping or even using as a sandwich spread.
“I would be pleased to scoop some of this hummus up on a pita chip at a party,” says Lara.
Best Budget Hummus
Marketside Classic Hummus
When you’re planning a party on a budget, every dollar counts. You can get Marketside, a delicious dip, for half the cost of some of its competitors.
This brand of hummus is available exclusively at Walmart and is “a solid option for snacking,” according to Editor Lauren Pahmeier.
Marketside hummus is robust in its texture while still being creamy. It also has just the right amount of salt and a hint of garlic. Who could say no to that piled on top of these Mediterranean-inspired nachos?
