McDonald’s Is Opening a Spinoff Restaurant Starring ’80s Mascot CosMC

Updated: Jan. 11, 2024

This is a blast from the '80s!

Not long ago, the world was going wild for Grimace and his birthday shake. While the party may be over for this purple fast-food mascot, the fun at McDonald’s hasn’t stopped. Its mascots seem to be making a comeback in the best way possible, and McD’s is capitalizing on the popularity.

In the late 1980s, McDonald’s introduced an alien mascot that was absolutely obsessed with fast food—rightfully so. Now, the brand is bringing back CosMC for a spinoff restaurant that’s sure to be out of this world.

What Is CosMC?

The better question is, who is CosMC? Like our pal Grimace and friends, he’s a former McDonald’s mascot. CosMC debuted around 1987 and appeared in numerous TV commercials in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Sporting bright orange skin and six arms, CosMC is an alien who can’t get enough McDonald’s burgers. Can you blame him? He’s decked out in a shiny space suit and was even briefly featured in the McDonald’s game for Nintendo. While he may not be the most recognizable mascot, he’s cute to boot.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski explained the concept, saying, “CosMc’s is a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s, but with its own unique personality.” We can’t wait to see what the CosMC personality entails!

For more blasts from the past, here are the McDonald’s secrets most people don’t know..

Where Will CosMC Open?

McDonald’s says it will be testing sites in a “limited geography,” though we’re not yet sure where those locations may be. I can only hope they’ll come visit me in Chicago. Luckily the grand openings aren’t too far off. Hopefully we’ll see some of the new CosMC restaurants opening in early 2024.

Will there finally be an outer space-themed restaurant near me? The inner child in me sure hopes so!
