Hot Dog Pie
A co-worker who loves hot dogs shared this recipe with me. Baked in a purchased pastry shell, the pie is easy to assemble and is on the table in just 30 minutes. —Amy Bullis, Henryville, Pennsylvania

I've made hot dogs and beans before, so it's not a stretch to add some ground beef. Add seasonings to taste, chili powder would make this like a chili hot dog stew. I wouldn't put it in a pie shell though, it sounds like a soggy mess. Cook the ground beef and hot dogs together, drain off any excess fat. Add seasonings and beans and heat through. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
Delicious, but be careful. If you're not constantly watching the pan of beef and hot dogs, you run the risk of burning your trailer down.
I'm incredulous. I can't believe "Taste of Home" would put this on their site.

Absolutely stunning. I never expected my life to change the way it did after my first bite. The first night I made hot dog pie, I ate the entire thing, and baked 2 more just to satisfy my hunger. I am currently planning to propose to a dish of hot dog pie, but I am still unsure. I may be 700 pounds, but the hot dog pie is helping me lose weight, at least that’s what I believe. We must praise the hot dog pie, and I definitely recommend it.
Absolutely awful. Made it exactly following the recipe and my kids and myself hated it. No point in the pie crust and pan. It becomes a soup that doesnt hold and resembles nothing close to a pie. My kids ate cold hot dogs instead.
Made as written. We ate enough to satisfy our hunger and threw the rest away. Couldn't even eat the leftovers for lunch the next day.
I've made this pie twice now. Based on personal preference, I leave the beans undrained, skip the mustard and use 1/2 - 1 tsp of mustard powder instead; and add a few spices such as chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder; and about 1/2 tsp salt as it can become too sweet (depending on the brand of beans). Otherwise, you can substitute Heinz 57 sauce for the ketchup to cut down the sweetness and add some spice. It can feed my fiance and I for 2 or 3 dinners, which is well appreciated, as we tend to work rotational shifts.
Made this last week and can only suggest that you don't drain the baked beans. It doesn't say either way on the recipe and so I did and it was kind of a dry meal.
Fast recipe, esp. if using the refrigerated pie dough. I did add 1/2 chopped onion to the meat while frying and 1 T. chili powder to add some kick . I made 2, 1 we ate and the other one I froze for another meal.
