Turkey Avocado Sandwich

Turkey sandwiches are like blank canvases for creating works of flavorful art. Our turkey avocado sandwich is one example, featuring a homemade smoked Gouda cheese spread, as well as nutritious avocado to pair with the smoked turkey. Tomato and lettuce balance out the flavors and make it a delectable sandwich. Are you hungry?
Ingredients for Turkey Avocado Sandwich
- Smoked Gouda cheese: Shred the smoked Gouda for this sandwich recipe, as it needs to be in shreds to make the cheesy spread.
- Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise mixes with the cheese to make a tasty spread.
- Green onion: Cut the onion into thin slices, as thin works best for the cheese spread.
- Seasonings: Garlic powder and coarsely ground pepper enhance the flavors of the cheese spread and the sandwich.
- Whole wheat bread: Toast this hearty bread ahead of time to speed up sandwich assembly.
- Butter: Softened butter on the toast adds buttery flavor to the sandwich. Slice the butter a little ahead of time and let it sit out a bit to soften.
- Romaine lettuce leaves: Romaine has a wonderful crunch that makes it enjoyable on a sandwich.
- Tomato: Slice the tomato in advance. Homegrown heirloom tomatoes are an excellent choice, as are tomatoes fresh from a farmers’ market.
- Sliced deli smoked turkey: Smoked turkey has a hint of smoky flavor that makes it wonderful for sandwiches.
- Avocado: Ripe avocado becomes a mashed avocado spread that adds vitamins C, E and K to this sandwich.
Directions
Step 1: Start assembling the sandwich
Combine the cheese, mayonnaise, green onion and seasonings and stir until they’re well blended. Spread two slices of toast with butter, then with the cheese mixture. Atop that, layer the lettuce, tomato and turkey.
Step 2: Mash avocado, finish the sandwich
Peel and mash the avocado; spread it over the remaining two slices of toast. Place the toast, avocado side down, over the turkey.
Recipe Variations
- Add bacon: Slices of crispy bacon turn this into a combination BLT and turkey avocado sandwich packed with flavor.
- Put a ring on it: Serve the turkey avocado sandwich on a toasted bagel instead of bread for a nice variation. Go for a bagel with complementary flavors such as an everything bagel, an asiago cheese bagel, or a roasted garlic bagel.
- Garlic, please: Spread garlic butter or garlic lemon butter on the toasted bread instead of plain butter for added flavor.
How to Store Turkey Avocado Sandwich
Store your turkey avocado sandwich wrapped in foil or plastic, or in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. It’ll keep, refrigerated, for about a day, but the avocado turns brown in no time at all. For that reason, either omit the avocado until you plan to eat the sandwich, or mix a few squirts of lemon juice in with the avocado as you mash it, as this helps keep the avocado from browning so quickly. It will still turn brown, just not as fast; and it is safe to eat even though it looks less appetizing after it browns.
Can you freeze a turkey avocado sandwich?
This sandwich is not a good candidate for freezing; here’s why: The tomato is too wet and doesn’t handle freezing well due to the moisture. Mayonnaise also tends to separate when frozen and then thawed. For this reason, the sandwich is best made fresh, or eaten within a day if stored in the refrigerator.
Turkey Avocado Sandwich Tips
What other breads could I use for this sandwich?
Choose breads that make good toast, or breads that don’t fall apart when used for a sandwich. Think beyond standard breads; ciabatta rolls work well, as do hoagie rolls, onion buns or even French bread hollowed out a bit so you can add even more turkey, cheese spread, tomatoes, avocado and lettuce! Slightly toast your chosen bread or roll in a toaster oven or on a hot skillet with a melted pat of butter for added flavor.
What should I serve with turkey avocado sandwiches?
Options abound here; how about some homemade potato chips, easy homemade pickles, some fresh fruit, or a contest-winning tomato basil soup.
Could I use turkey leftovers instead of sliced deli turkey?
Sure! This sandwich would taste excellent using leftover turkey or even rotisserie chicken. Tear or slice the turkey into pieces that fit well on a sandwich. Enjoy!
