Going gluten-free, whether it’s because of allergies, health reasons or lifestyle changes, can be hard. Most food has to switch over to gluten-free recipes, and even the foods you thought are gluten-free might not be! You even have to be careful when it comes to what you drink.

You might know what to ask the waiter if you’re gluten-free when eating out, but what about the barista at your local Starbucks? Not all of Starbucks’ drinks are gluten-free, and the baristas may not always be aware of what ingredients contain gluten, even though they’re trying their best. That’s why it’s helpful to have a list of what you can order at Starbucks.

According to a Starbucks representative, Starbucks can’t guarantee that any of its unpackaged products are completely gluten-free, as shared equipment is used to store, prepare and serve them. This might lead to cross-contamination, so you might want to skip buying anything freshly prepared or unpackaged if you’re extremely allergic or have celiac disease. Packaged items, like bottled drinks, are the exception, as these are sealed until the customer receives them.

Gluten-Free Coffee Frappucinos

Frappuccinos can be complicated! According to some baristas, it can be hard to tell if your favorite Frapp contains gluten because they contain so many ingredients. Most of the syrups used don’t have an ingredient list, and even some ingredients can end up containing gluten without explicitly saying so.

The Java Chip Frappucino, for one, is definitely one to avoid, since the java chips contain gluten in the form of wheat. We’d recommend approaching Frappuccinos with caution, or replicating something like the Caramel Frappucino at home instead if you’re allergic. These Frapps are most likely to be gluten-free:

  • Coffee Frappuccino
  • Chocolate Frappuccino
  • Caramel Frappuccino
  • Mocha Frappuccino
  • Coconut Mocha Frappuccino
  • Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino
  • White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino
  • White Mocha Frappuccino
  • Cafe Vanilla Frappuccino
  • Vanilla Matcha Frappuccino
