Kraft Just Recalled 83,800 Cases of Its American Cheese Slices

Updated: Sep. 20, 2023

Film stuck to the recalled products can "be unpleasant and potentially cause a gagging or choking hazard."

Is anything more comforting than a grilled cheese? In particular, a grilled cheese with gooey American cheese? We think not.

But, if Kraft is your go-to brand of American singles, be wary. Because according to a recall issued by Kraft Heinz on September 19, nearly 84,000 cases of individually-wrapped Kraft slices could pose a choking hazard.

Before toasting up any more grilled cheese sandwiches, here’s what to know.

What products are being recalled?

The recall affects individually wrapped Kraft Singles American processed cheese slices. Several consumers have already issued complaints about finding plastic stuck to cheese slices. Six of those complaints were reports of choking or gagging due to the plastic.

After receiving the complaints, Kraft found out that the plastic came from an issue with one of its wrapping machines. Thin strips of individual film stayed on slices once the wrapper was removed, posing the hazard. While Kraft has fixed the machine and “thoroughly inspected” its other processing machines, the recall was still issued. 83,800 cases of American cheese were affected, and if each case has 12 packages of 24 Kraft Singles, that’s roughly 24 million individually-wrapped slices that could pose a choking hazard.
