Best Buy Just Recalled 700,000+ Air Fryers Due to Potential Fire and Burn Hazards

This recall affects products sold between November 2018 and February 2022. That's a lot of Christmas gifts.

The most popular gift last Christmas (and every Christmas this decade) was an air fryer. It’s no wonder, this countertop convection oven can be used for everything from crispy vegetables to decadent desserts. By 2020, nearly 40% of U.S. homes had an air fryer—and sales of air fryers have increased by 76% since then! It’s a hot gift, but if you bought your air fryer at Best Buy, there’s a chance it may be subject to this air fryer recall.

Why Was the Recall Issued?

The way an air fryer works is by blowing super hot air around food to make it nice and crisp. Now Best Buy says that certain models of its Insignia air fryers and air fryer ovens can become too hot, posing potential fire and burn hazards.

So far, Best Buy has received 68 reports from U.S. consumers about air fryers catching fire, burning or melting. This includes seven reports of property damage and two reports of injuries, including an injury to a child’s leg.

How Do I Know If I Bought a Recalled Product?

This air fryer recall involves 635,000 Insignia Digital Air Fryers, Insignia Analog Air Fryers and Insignia Digital Air Fryer Ovens sold in the U.S., plus 137,000 air fryers sold in Canada. The products were all sold between November 2018 and February 2022.

In the U.S., affected model numbers are:

  • NS-AF32DBK9
  • NS-AF32MBK9
  • NS-AF50MBK9
  • NS-AF53DSS0
  • NS-AF53MSS0
  • NS-AF55DBK9
  • NS-AFO6DBK1
  • NS-AFO6DSS1

The brand name INSIGNIA should be on the top or front of the unit. Look for a rating label on the underside of your air fryer to find the model number. You can review all the model numbers and see photos of affected air fryers at Best Buy’s Insignia recall site.

What Should I Do Next?

If your air fryer is part of this recall, stop using it immediately. You can register at Best Buy’s Insignia recall site or call Best Buy at 800-566-7498 to arrange a return through a pre-paid shipping box. You’ll receive a refund of sorts: a $50 credit to use at Best Buy. You don’t need a receipt to get the $50 credit, but if you have a receipt and paid more than $50, you’ll get a credit in that amount. Don’t return your air fryer directly to a Best Buy retail store, though—you won’t be able to get the credit.
