A Frito-Lay Chips Recall Affects Up to 4 States—Here’s What We Know

Updated: May 10, 2023

People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk need to be cautious of these Lay's products.

When it comes to go-to potato chip brands, Lay’s is one of the first that comes to mind. From a bag of classic Lay’s to its returning cheesy garlic bread flavor, a Lay’s product is pretty much guaranteed to be delicious.

However, if you’ve bought a bag of classic Lay’s within the past few weeks, you may need to double-check your bag, especially if you’re allergic or have a severe sensitivity to milk. On May 4, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a voluntary Frito-Lay recall. So before opening any Lay’s bags, here’s what you need to know.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall affects 146 bags of Lay’s Classic Party Size Potato Chips and Lay’s Classic Mix and Match Potato Chips. For the former, 13 oz. bags have been impacted. Whereas for the latter, 15 5/8 oz. bags have been affected.

Why Are Lays Chips Being Recalled?

The voluntary recall is due to allergy concerns. According to the FDA’s announcement, the bags “may contain undeclared milk ingredients from sour cream and onion potato chips.” A consumer complaint resulted in an investigation leading to the findings. Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are at risk of a potentially “serious or life-threatening” allergic reaction. Fortunately, no allergic reactions related to the products have been reported.
