How to Make a DIY Wine Bottle Hummingbird Feeder

I’ve always wanted to design my own glass hummingbird feeder from an old wine bottle, but I’ve never been crazy about the hummingbird feeder stopper corks that most of those projects involve. It’s my experience that these almost always leak, and leaks draw ants and bees. So I was excited recently to discover that I could use the saucer base from an inexpensive store-bought plastic feeder (mine cost just $3) and attach it to a wine bottle for a perfect fit! For my first DIY wine bottle hummingbird feeder project, I used glass paint to recreate the popular “confetti glass” look. Here’s how I did it.

Supplies:

• Glass wine bottle
• Plastic hummingbird feeder base (be sure it fits your glass bottle without leaking—not all bottles will be a good fit to all bases)
• Glass paints in colors of your choice
• Metal corner bracket
• Super glue

• Clean your bottle thoroughly inside and out. Remove all labels. Wipe down the bottle with rubbing alcohol to remove the glue. Rinse with water and allow to dry.
• Using glass paint, apply drops and lines in scattered patterns around the bottle. The idea is to make it look like falling confetti. Tip: Be sparing with the paint, as it will run. Squeeze the bottle very gently when applying.
• Stand bottle upright to allow to dry for at least 8 hours.
• Glue the metal corner bracket to the bottom of the bottle and allow to dry. Tie twine through the bracket to create a hanger.
• Fill your bottle with hummingbird sugar water and screw the base into place. Turn upright carefully over the sink (in case of any unforeseen leaks).
• Hang your DIY wine bottle hummingbird feeder outdoors.
