This is my family's soda bread recipe passed down from my father's side of the family.

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold butter
1/2 cup currants
1-1/4 cups buttermilk
1 egg

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease an 8-in. square baking pan; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in currants. In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 3-5 times. Pat into prepared pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until top is golden brown.
