Wonton Mozzarella Sticks

You won't believe something this easy could taste so fantastic! Crunchy outside, gooey cheese inside, these mozzarella sticks are a treat all ages will love. Kids could help wrap them, too. —Shirley Warren, Thiensville, Wisconsin
  • Total Time
    Prep/Total Time: 20 min.
  • Makes
    1 dozen

Ingredients

  • 12 pieces string cheese
  • 12 large egg roll wrappers (see note)
  • Oil for deep-fat frying
  • Marinara or spaghetti sauce

Directions

  • Place a piece of string cheese near the bottom corner of one egg roll wrapper (keep remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel until ready to use). Fold bottom corner over cheese. Roll up halfway; fold sides toward center over cheese. Moisten remaining corner with water; roll up tightly to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers and cheese.
  • In an electric skillet, heat 1/2 in. of oil to 375°.
  • Fry sticks, a few at a time, for 30-60 seconds on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve with marinara sauce.

Test Kitchen Tips
  • Look for egg roll wrappers in the produce section.
  • Be sure to get wrappers labeled egg roll wrappers and not spring roll wrappers. Egg roll wrappers are soft and bendable while in the package. Spring roll wrappers are usually thin, stiff and call for a dip in water to soften them.
  • For ultra crispy fried foods, the key is having the oil hot enough. If your mozzarella sticks are sogging out, kick your oil temp up a couple of notches.
  • These are also super yummy dipped in soy sauce or sweet chili sauce.

Haven't tried yet, looks like a 5; food fried in a lot of oil is off-limits for me. I just got an air-fryer; anyone have suggestions on how to air-fry?

Fantastic recipe, as easy as it gets! Reading other comments, I can see where some might have problems, though. I take away a point because they're called "won ton," when won ton has nothing to do with the recipe. But I give the point back to offset the negative reviews from 1/2/17 where the reviewer obviously used spring roll wraps instead of egg roll wraps, and 2/15/14 where the reviewer isn't even reviewing the recipe, but another reviewer's suggestions!Bottom line: this is a great, easy recipe that goes from prep to table in 20 minutes, and got rave reviews in my house. Use the right wraps and follow the recipe as written.

I made these for a Memorial Day appetizer - REALLY EASY and GOOD! They would make a better finger food if cut in half and maybe use wonton wrappers.

Very simple to make. Just make sure the seal around the edges is good or the mozzarella will melt out. I also made some cheddar cheese sticks. My son and his friends love them. Will definitely be making these in the future.

Egg roll wrappers are usually found in the produce department.

There seems to be some confusion as to what kind of wrappers to buy and where to buy them. Most grocery stores will have them in the produce section. Both wonton (much smaller and for wonton dumplings) and egg roll wrappers. An Asian market is a good source. No, Spring Roll Wrappers are not firm and do not need to be put into water to soften, unless you buy rice paper wrappers. Asian markets have frozen wrappers that are pliable and easy to use. They are thinner and In my opinion much better tasting for egg rolls and these cheese rolls.A quick dessert? Roll up 1/2 of a banana sprinkled with cinnamon, fry and serve with whipped cream.

These sound delicious but i have been unable to find egg roll wrappers. What dept of the supermarket are they located. Would love to try in my air fryer.
