Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions, cut into 1/8-inch slices
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1-1/4 pounds lean ground turkey
  • 6 hamburger buns, split

Directions

In a large nonstick skillet over low heat, cook onions in oil and butter for 1 hour or until tender, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with sugar, salt and pepper; cook over medium-low heat for 45-60 minutes or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with thyme; keep warm.
In a large bowl, combine the green onions, Worcestershire sauce and pepper sauce; crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties.
Coat grill rack with cooking spray before starting the grill. Grill burgers, covered, over medium-hot heat for 5-7 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 165° and juices run clear. Serve on buns with caramelized onions. Yield: 6 servings.
