I love the added touch of a homemade condiment, and this steak sauce recipe is a great one to have ready for meat-centric meals. You can use it to enhance different types of burgers or steak recipes. It can also be used as a marinade or even mixed with ground meat instead of your typical dry seasonings.

Similar to making barbecue sauce recipes, steak sauce recipes require just a handful of ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry and fridge. Once everything is mixed together, the sauce ready to serve. Don’t hesitate to keep it on hand for later, since the flavors will only get better with time.

Steak Sauce Ingredients

  • Ketchup: I recommend using your favorite store-bought ketchup brand for this recipe, since it will have the consistency and flavor you know and love.
  • Mustard: Use yellow mustard like the recipe calls for, or jazz it up a bit with a different type or flavor, like Dijon mustard or whole grain mustard.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Worcestershire sauce is a magical ingredient that provides an umami flavor that’s hard to replicate with other ingredients.
  • Cider vinegar: Stick with basic apple cider vinegar, which adds tartness and a subtle sweetness.
  • Soy sauce: Use regular soy sauce or reduced-salt soy sauce if you’re trying to go light on your salt.
  • Honey: The honey rounds everything out with its sweetness. Because it’s so thick, it helps thicken the sauce.
  • Seasonings: This sauce is packed with flavorful ingredients, so it only needs salt, pepper, garlic powder and a dash of hot pepper sauce for additional seasonings.

Steak Sauce Variations

  • Use a different sweetener: I love homemade condiments because you can change up the flavors and try something a little different. Instead of honey, make this steak sauce with molasses, brown sugar or even pomegranate molasses, which is more sour but a very flavorful sweetener.
  • Add brandy or Cognac: For an added layer of earthiness and meatiness, try cooking down your steak sauce in a pan with a splash of brandy or Cognac. Mix the liquor with the sauce ingredients in the pan and let it simmer for a few minutes until the alcohol has cooked off. Remove the sauce from the pan and allow it to cool before serving it.
  • Finish it with butter: Butter makes everything a little better. Bring the ingredients together in a pan and then add a couple tablespoons of butter. Simmer the sauce until the butter has completely melted and incorporated into the sauce. Remove the steak sauce from the pan and allow to cool before serving.

How to Store Steak Sauce

This steak sauce is delicious as soon as it’s made, but it gets even better when you let the flavors marinate for a day or two! Store it in the fridge in an airtight container.

How long does steak sauce last?

This steak sauce lasts for up to a week in the fridge. Or you can freeze it for up to three months, and then let it thaw overnight in the fridge when you’re ready to use it.

How else can you use steak sauce?

This steak sauce goes with so many meaty things. It’s primarily used as a cold condiment, but it also makes a great marinade for steaks, burgers or even chicken. Slather some on a grilled steak while you’re cooking it and let the sugars caramelize as it cooks. You can also mix it with ground beef for flavorful burgers, meatballs or meatloaf.

Can I eat this steak sauce with vegetables?

There’s no rule against enjoying steak sauce with vegetables. Try dipping potato wedges into this sauce or drizzle some over a scoop of mashed potatoes. You can also serve it with grilled or roasted cauliflower or broccoli. Just keep in mind that the steak sauce contains Worcestershire sauce, which is usually made with animal products.
