  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon


  • 1. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flours, baking powder, spices and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk just until moistened. Fold in walnuts.
  • 2. Transfer to a greased 8x4-in. loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.
  • 3. Beat butter ingredients until blended; serve with bread. Yield: 1 loaf (12 slices) and 1/2 cup butter.

"Very flavorful and smelled delicious baking. The texture is a little denser and drier than I expected. It was very good, but my family prefers a moister quick bread."

"This bread with the butter is WONDERFUL! It's like all things autumn whisked up into a tempting loaf of quick bread! The only thing I changed was that I added toasted pecans instead of walnuts. I can't wait to have my husband try it! I can image using the butter on pancakes, french toast, regular toast, bagels, ect. I just love it!"
