Savory Beef Sandwiches Recipe

Savory Beef Sandwiches Recipe

Before heading to work in the morning (I'm a dental assistant), I'll get this going in the slow cooker. Then it's all ready to serve - usually with hard rolls and potato salad or another salad - as soon as my husband and I walk in. When my son - one of three children...24, 22 and 19 - moved to another state recently, I cut up beef roast in smaller portions, repackaged it and sent seasonings for a two-person slow cooker as his housewarming present. -Lynn Williamson, Hayward, Wisconsin
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 15 min. Cook: 6 hours YIELD:8-10 servings

  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 boneless beef chuck roast (3 to 4 pounds), halved
  • 8 to 10 sandwich rolls, split

  • 1. Combine seasonings; rub over roast. Place in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until meat is tender. Shred with a fork. Serve on rolls. Yield: 8-10 servings.

Recipe Note

Editor's Note: No liquid is added to the slow cooker. The moisture comes from the roast.

"Made exactly as written. Seemed like an odd combination of spices, but it works!"

"I really liked these sandwiches. Eating the meat by itself it was a little too salty, so next time I will probably decrease the salt by about half. I cooked a 1 1/2 pound roast (not halved) in a 4 qt. slow cooker and it was done after about 3 1/2 hours."

"This is excellent!! My husband would eat the whole thing, if he could...I've found that using a 4 to 5 lb. roast works well, too..."

"Fantastic recipe! I used chili powder instead of the cayenne pepper because I ran out, and it still tasted fabulous. I will definitely be making these for get-togethers, and they are replacing my old recipe for hot beefs."

"Oh so good and easy to just throw it in the slow cooker! We didn't have any marjoram so just left it out. Just a recommendation ~ I would serve it for 6, not 8-10. Maybe we're just big eaters!
