Quick Green Beans with Bacon

Green beans with bacon and onions makes such an easy side dish. Fresh beans lend a crisp, bright flavor to any meal. They're best when served hot. —Mari Anne Warren, Milton, Wisconsin
  • Total Time
    Prep/Total Time: 20 min.
  • Makes
    8 servings

  • 4 bacon strips, diced
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 8 cups fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper

  • In a large skillet, cook bacon and onion over medium heat until bacon is crisp and onion is tender.
  • Meanwhile, place beans in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Cook, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes or until crisp-tender; drain well. Add to bacon mixture. Sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss to coat.

Test Kitchen tips
  • To keep the beans moist and fresh, store them in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer in a plastic bag.
  • To choose green beans that are perfectly fresh, make sure the pods are firm and not too lumpy. If the beans inside are too big, the texture will be tough.

This is easy and delicious. I used lower sodium bacon so I could control and reduce the sodium levels. I also added a few strips of red pepper I had in the refrigerator that needed to be used. I cooked them with the bacon and onion. I will definitely make it again.

We enjoyed this recipe. I blanched the green beans ahead of time and I sautéed the onion in bacon drippings I had in the fridge. Just before serving, I added a splash of white vinegar as suggested by another reviewer. Delicious and I would definitely make this again!

Super quick and so tasty. The bacon really bumps up the taste. And I let a little bit of the bacon grease in the pan . It really coated each green bean adding even more taste to the beans . I added a few mushrooms to the mix. I highly recommend this recipe.

Very tasty, and so easy! I don't add the onion until the bacon is nearly done, so the bacon is crisp but the onions are just wilted.

My husband don't really like green beans, but when I prepared this dish with bacon, he ate all. Very it.
