I've made this recipe with chicken instead of beef, and the results were equally good. The combination of ranch salad dressing and Cajun seasoning also is perfect as a dip for fresh veggies.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ranch salad dressing
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 3/4 pound beef top sirloin steak
  • 1/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

  1. In a shallow dish, combine salad dressing and seasoning; add the beef and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight. Drain steak and discard marinade. Using rubber spatula, remove excess ranch coating from steak.
  2. Place 15x10x1-in. baking sheet into oven; preheat oven to 375°. In a shallow plate, combine the cornmeal, bread crumbs and garlic powder. Coat both sides of beef in cornmeal mixture.
  3. Carefully remove baking sheet from oven; grease. Quickly place steak on baking sheet and return to oven. Bake until bottom is golden brown, 8-10 minutes. Carefully flip steak; bake until the meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 135°; medium, 140°; medium-well, 145°), 8-10 minutes longer.
Ranch Steak Tips

Can you use other cuts of beef to make oven-fried ranch steak?

You can certainly use other cuts of steak in place of the sirloin; other great choices would be ribeye or New York strip steak as they also have wonderful beefy flavor. We use ranch dressing to flavor this ranch steak recipe, but there actually is a cut of beef known as "ranch steak!"

How can you prevent making soggy oven-fried ranch steak?

The secret to an oven-fried ranch steak that's crispy is preheating the baking sheet in the oven; this mimics the hot surface of a skillet, which starts cooking the surface of the steak instantly. Also, be sure to remove any excess marinade by blotting with paper towels before coating the steak in the breadcrumb mixture.

What can you serve with oven-fried ranch steak?

Round out your steak dinner with your favorite potato and vegetable side dishes that make steak even better, like a twice baked potato and green beans.
