Orange Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Our Test Kitchen gave simple buttercream frosting a tangy twist by adding a splash of orange juice. It goes wonderfully on orange cupcakes or over white, yellow or chocolate cake.
TOTAL TIME: Prep/Total Time: 10 min. YIELD:16 servings

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons orange juice

Directions

  • 1. In a small mixing bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the confectioners' sugar, orange peel and vanilla. Add enough orange juice to achieve frosting consistency. Yield: 1 cup.

1 tablespoon: 85 calories, 3g fat (2g saturated fat), 8mg cholesterol, 29mg sodium, 15g carbohydrate (14g sugars, 0 fiber), 0 protein.

"Nice frosting. I used Orange Extract instead of the vanilla. I put it on a Red Velvet cake (without the red dye, it doesn't add any flavor and who needs the chemical dye) because chocolate cake and orange go together!"

"I found this frosting to be sickeningly sweet. It was not a good match for the stellar Golden Orange Cupcakes. I doubled the recipe because the Golden Orange Cupcakes recipe yielded 48 mini cupcakes, and I knew I'd need more than 1 cup of frosting. Just way too sweet."
