Hamburger Steaks with Mushroom Gravy

Here's a meat-and-potatoes meal that no one will want to miss. It makes for a hearty dish the whole family will cozy up to in no time! —Denise Wheeler, Newaygo, Michigan

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 envelope onion soup mix, divided
  • Dash pepper
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1-3/4 cups cold water
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 jar (4-1/2 ounces) whole mushrooms, drained
  • Hot cooked mashed potatoes

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the egg, bread crumbs, 2 tablespoons soup mix and pepper. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into four patties.
  • In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, cook patties over medium heat until a thermometer reads 160°, and juices run clear, 4-5 minutes on each side. Set aside and keep warm.
  • Combine the flour, water, Worcestershire sauce and remaining soup mix until blended; stir into skillet. Add mushrooms. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until thickened, about 5 minutes. Serve sauce with patties and mashed potatoes.

    Tried this last night. Didn't have mushrooms, not really a fan, so added a can of cream of mushroom soup to the gravy with about another 1/2 can water. Added some steak seasoning to the meat. Also added about a clove of minced garlic to the meat. Husband thought it was good. I thought it was a bit strong or too salty, so next time, I will eliminate the extra seasoning. Will make again. It was easy to throw together with ingredients I usually have on hand.

    Just made this tonight. It was good but not good enough to make again, rather tasteless even garlic powder didn't help much. May make it again and do some "punching." Sorry, will not make it again, as is.

    Delicious! I made the patties into mini-meatballs and used fresh mushrooms. This is comfort food at its best!!!

    Very good, but next time I will double the gravy and use fresh, slicked mushrooms.

    We thought this was very good.It was pretty easy to make and flavors worked well. A keeper for sure.

    I doubled this. I used one onion soup mix for the burgers and a beefy onion soup mix for the gravy. I used fresh mushrooms. I will be keeping this recipe

    Easy and goes together quickly. I thought it was a little bland, so I added a little more Worcestershire and salt and pepper. Will make it again.

    Very tasty! I added my burgers back in to the gravy and let simmer about 15 minutes. Gravy was great over mashed potatoes!
