Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries, pitted
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • Sparkling water, optional

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, stir together first 3 ingredients over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Simmer until liquid turns a dark purple and cherries are tender, 10-15 minutes, crushing cherries with a spoon or masher. Remove from heat; let stand 10 minutes. Strain mixture through a fine sieve; discard solids. Refrigerate, covered, until serving. If desired, combine 8 ounces sparkling water with 1 tablespoon of syrup to serve.
