Cube Steaks with Gravy Recipe

Here's a hearty, home-style dinner your family will love after a busy day. The slow-cooked beef is wonderful served over mashed potatoes or noodles. —Judy Long, Limestone, Tennessee
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 15 min. Cook: 8-1/2 hours YIELD:6 servings


  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 beef cube steaks (4 ounces each)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced and separated into rings
  • 3 cups water, divided
  • 1 envelope brown gravy mix
  • 1 envelope mushroom gravy mix
  • 1 envelope onion gravy mix
  • Hot mashed potatoes or cooked noodles


  • 1. Place flour in a large resealable plastic bag. Add steaks, a few at a time, and shake until completely coated.
  • 2. In a skillet, cook steaks in oil until lightly browned on each side. Transfer to a 3-qt. slow cooker. Add the onion and 2 cups water. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or until meat is tender.
  • 3. In a bowl, whisk together gravy mixes with remaining water. Add to slow cooker; cook 30 minutes longer. Serve over mashed potatoes or noodles. Yield: 6 servings.

"This is the only way I am making cube steak from now on. They were so tender. And the gravy was so delicious. Next time I will be sure to brown them a little longer. Even after 8 hours in the slow cooker they were still a little under done. But that was my bad. They reheat great also. Definitely making again."

"Because I don't use bottled gravy, I saved the browning pan to make the gravy later. Instead of adding water to the crock-pot, I used beef broth instead. After the meat was tender, I removed it from the cooking juices. In the frying pan, I added flour to the pan with a little more oil (if needed) to make a roux. Then, I added the juices along with the onions and made a thickened gravy. Salt and pepper to taste. Return the meat to the gravy. YUMMY!"

"Wow!! Great way to make this meat tender. I could not find mushroom gravy or onion gravy. I used three packets of brown gravy, but bought fresh mushrooms, and cooked them on the stove, then added them when I added the gravy mix. One thing--I did season meat and the flour mixture with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and some beef seasoning. I also diced up some red bell pepper and some celery that needed to be used up. We gobbled this up!!! Made a ton of extra gravy, so I froze the remaining gravy and will use for another meal."

"I make cubed steak about 1X a mo., I have changed my gravy over the years from scratch to Aus Jus gravy mix & add sour cream to make creamy and use beef broth in lieu of water. Saute white onions in the microwave and add to the gravy. Cream & real butter with sour cream to the mashed potato's. For the cubed steaks prep, I flour them by pressing into the flour in a mixing bowl (pepper added), and then press panko into the meat by kneading them to tenderize the meat. It doesn't take so long to cook to get tender cube steaks then. Love em!"

"I have 2 very picky teenage daughters so I was reluctant to try this because I didn't think they would even try cubed steak. I'm very glad I went ahead and made it. Neither one of them had any intentions of tying it so I planned on leftover for my husband and I. "This has become a family favorite. If you don't like the overwhelming onion flavor, substitute dry minced onion in place of the raw onion.

We also add Worcestershirre sauce to the meat before we add the gravy mixture. We fully cook the steaks before adding to the pot. I let it cook all day and by the time dinner is ready, even the dogs are ready to eat!
(Hint: let the leftover gravy completely cool and give it your dog. They will go absolutely nuts!)."
