Cranberry-Almond Apple Pie

My grandmother made this treat every year for Christmas. It’s much better than everyday apple pie. The recipe is a family treasure. —Maxine Theriauit, Nashua, New Hampshire
Ingredients

Dough for single-crust pie

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 tablespoons butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon salt

6 medium tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced

1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries

TOPPING:

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 tablespoons cold butter

1/3 cup sliced almonds, toasted
Directions

Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle; transfer to a 9-in. pie plate. Trim crust to 1/2 in. beyond rim of plate; flute edge.

In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, butter, nutmeg and salt. Add apples and cranberries; stir gently. Pour into crust.

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour and cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in almonds; sprinkle over filling. Bake until apples are tender, about 1 hour.
