Ingredients for Oreo Hot Chocolate

  • Oreo cookies: To maximize the Oreo flavor, cookies are added to the cocoa and are also used as a garnish.
  • Milk: Use whole milk for the richest hot chocolate. However, skim or low-fat milk are also perfectly acceptable in this hot chocolate with Oreos recipe.
  • Cocoa powder: Use a high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder for the best flavor—no matter the kind of hot chocolate recipe you’re making.
  • Sugar: Two tablespoons of granulated sugar sweeten the cocoa.
  • Whipped cream: What’s hot chocolate without a generous dollop of whipped cream? Make sweetened whipped cream from scratch, or use your favorite store-bought brand.

Directions

Step 1: Prep the Oreos for the cocoa

Separate the chocolate wafers from the filling of each Oreo cookie. Reserve the filling. Crush the wafers in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin, or pulse them in a food processor until fine crumbs are formed. Set both the cookie crumbs and filling aside.

Step 2: Make the cocoa

Add the milk, sugar, baking cocoa, Oreo crumbs and Oreo filling to a small saucepan and heat them over medium heat.

Whisk until the cookie crumbs and filling have dissolved and the mixture is heated through.

Step 3: Garnish and serve

Pour the hot chocolate into two mugs. Top them with whipped cream and Oreo crumbles. Serve them immediately.

Oreo Hot Chocolate Variations

  • Make it gluten-free: To make gluten-free hot chocolate, simply use gluten-free Oreos.
  • Use melted chocolate: For a more decadent Oreo hot chocolate, use 1/4 cup of chocolate chips or grated chocolate instead of the cocoa powder. Semisweet chocolate is good place to start, though milk chocolate and dark chocolate are great too.
  • Make it vegan: Want a little Oreo fun fact? Oreos are naturally vegan! For a completely vegan Oreo hot chocolate, use your favorite non-dairy milk and whipped cream substitute. (In my opinion, whipped coconut cream is a delicious substitute!)
