Caramel Squares

TOTAL TIME: Prep: 10 min. Cook: 30 min. YIELD: 10 servings
I make these for my friends and co-workers and they just marvel over them. I used to buy caramel squares in my town's little restaurant on my way home from school as a kid, and I think I have come up with a recipe that is just as great as those were!

Ingredients

• 1 cup butter or oleo
• 2 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• dash of salt
• 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
In a heavy 3-qt. saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and milk; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook and stir constantly until mixture reaches 248° (firm-ball stage) on a candy thermometer, about 30-40 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla. Pour into buttered 9x13 pan to cool thoroughly. Cut into small squares and wrap in saran wrap or press n seal wrap
