Chocolate Banana Bread

Nothing tops old-fashioned banana bread, except maybe this chocolate version! Each slice is studded with nuts. —Connie Deke, DeWitt, Nebraska

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 medium)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, bananas, milk and vanilla. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; add to the banana mixture and mix just until combined. Fold in nuts if desired. Transfer to a greased 9x5-in. loaf pan.
  • Bake for 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

    This bread is wonderful. I didn't find the cocoa overpowered the bananas. Maybe I had enough bananas in the mix. Or stronger ones. It is very moist. I was looking for a regular banana bread recipe. Saw the chocolate one and thought I'd try that. The first recipe I saw had an ingredient I didn't have on hand. This had everything I had. I'm really picky about anything I make. This was really good. I added chocolate chunks instead of nuts because my son does not like nuts. He really loves this. Not too much chocolate.

    The cocoa overpowered any banana flavor. I was hoping for more banana flavor. Bread had a nice texture and I did add chocolate chips and nuts. I probably will not make again.

    I ended up adding slightly more banana, just because I had a couple extra that needed to be used, some chopped freeze dried raspberries, and chopped toasted pecans. This turned out DELICIOUS!!!!! So good, that it was gone in one day.

    This is an easy recipe and just enough chocolate. I left out the nuts.

    This bread is a nice variation of a traditional banana bread. I love the chocolate flavor. I may try adding chocolate chips next time for more chocolate. I also left out the nuts.
