Caprese Sandwich Tips
What are some substitutions you can make in caprese sandwiches?
If you're not a big fan of mayo, feel free to spread butter on each slice of toast instead. However, make sure you don't swap out anything for the basil, tomatoes or fresh mozzarella—they're essential components of caprese (in sandwich,
salad or
kabob form).
What else can you add to caprese sandwiches?
A caprese sandwich is endlessly customizable, and pairs perfectly with so many ingredients. If you want to add protein, go with grilled chicken, salami or prosciutto. Otherwise, grilled or roasted eggplant would make the sandwich a bit more hearty. Add arugula for more greens and a peppery note in every bite. Try swiping pesto on your bread slices, or drizzling balsamic glaze over your fillings before you top off the sandwich. Finally, you can also enjoy this caprese sandwich hot by using your
panini press.
What can you serve with caprese sandwiches?
One of our
fruit salad recipes would make a light, refreshing pair with caprese sandwiches, as would this
vegetable couscous salad. If you want a heartier side, try
air-fryer sweet potato fries or
air-fryer potato chips.
