Basic White Sauce


  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Dash white pepper
  • 1 cup 2% milk


  • 1. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Use immediately or refrigerate.

    Love this because its the prefect most simple base then once you have this you can add whatever seasonings, cheeses, ect. To flavor it to whatever youre cooking.

    I made this white sauce for a potato-ham scallop I just took out of the oven. I doubled the recipe and it came out smooth and creamy and the scalloped potatoes and ham tasted wonderful.

    The best basic sauce recipe. You can do anything with it, I love to add curry and abit of cheese and serve it over veggies! It generally needs abit more salt, though.

    have made this many times. I add onions and pour it over par boiled thickly sliced boiled potatoes, top with bread crumbs & cheese and bake until browned for a wonderful potato side dish.
