Barbecue Sauce Recipe

This is a delicious staple to have on hand during the summer grilling season. Use the flavorful sauce to baste chicken or to top hamburgers and hot dogs right off the grill.
TOTAL TIME: Prep/Total Time: 30 min. YIELD:11 servings


  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Few drops hot pepper sauce
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper


  • 1. In a saucepan, cook onion in butter until tender. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for 20-30 minutes or until sauce reaches desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Use as a basting sauce when grilling hamburgers or chicken and/or use as a condiment. Store in the refrigerator. Yield: about 1-1/3 cups.

"It was way too "vinegary' for me! I counter-balanced that with some baking soda and then it cam out really nice. I also added a bit of liquid smoke. I will make it again but I will half the vinegar amount. (it was apple cider vinegar). We used it on our grilled pork chops. There were none left, so it wasn't horrible!! ;)"

"I made this sauce for pork chops. I substituted "vinegar" with cider vinegar and it was so tasty! Big hit with the entire family. I was able to make the sauce ahead of time and then put it in the fridge until I was ready to cook the pork chops. I ended up having the cook the pork chops longer than 20 minutes, but using a thermometer helped me determine when they were done (160 degrees)."
