This simple-to-fix recipe came out of an old Swedish cookbook that my mom always held together with a large rubber band. The recipe is my favorite!

Ingredients

  • 6 large baking apples, pared and sliced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • VANILLA SAUCE:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Arrange apples in a 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan. Combine cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar. Reserve 1 tablespoon; sprinkle remaining mixture over apples. In a mixing bowl, combine butter, milk, remaining sugar, flour and baking powder. Drop by tablespoonfuls over apples; sprinkle reserved cinnamon/sugar on top. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minute or until golden brown. Meanwhile, for sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and water in a saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until thick. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Serve sauce and kuchen warm. Yield: 10-12 servings.

"I doubled this recipe and served to seniors yesterday at a retirement home and they finished the pan quickly. I plan to enlarge the recipe and serve to seniors at church. My husband really liked this recipe and it's a keeper."
