Anise Sugar Cookies

As much as I love giving away my baking, a few goodies—like these anise sugar cookies—are keepers. The light anise flavor and buttery texture make them a perfect Christmas treat. —P. Marchesi, Rocky Point, Long Island, New York
Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened

1-1/2 cups sugar

2 large eggs, room temperature

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon anise extract

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons aniseed

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

Optional: Frosting of choice and sprinkles
Directions

Preheat oven to 375°. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in eggs and extract. Combine the flour, aniseed, salt, baking powder and baking soda; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.

Shape into 1-in. balls; place on greased baking sheets. Dip the bottom of glass in sugar; use to flatten cookies.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until set. Cool on wire racks. If desired, decorate cookies with frosting and sprinkles.
