Amish Waffles Recipe

This waffles are so crispy and tasty, you wouldn't believe they could get any better but then you add the topping. It is so delicious.—Neil and Jeanne Liechty, Pensacola, Florida
TOTAL TIME: Prep/Total Time: 30 min. YIELD:8 servings


  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sifted cake flour
  • 1-1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 large eggs, well beaten
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-2/3 cups water
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 8 ounces frozen blueberries
  • 8 ounces frozen raspberries
  • Vanilla ice cream, optional


  • 1. Preheat waffle maker. Mix first seven ingredients in order just until smooth. Bake waffles according to manufacturer’s directions until golden brown.
  • 2. Meanwhile, for topping, combine water, sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup and food coloring in a small saucepan over medium heat until thickened. Remove from heat; add gelatin mix, stirring until dissolved. Cool; add berries. Serve warm over waffles; if desired, add vanilla ice cream. Yield: 8 servings.

Recipe Note

Test Kitchen Tip

  • As you can imagine, corn syrup isn't an ingredient Amish cooks wouldn't have available to them but it does give the sauce a velvety texture and consistency. You can certainly leave it out, just add additional sugar to your desired sweetness level.
